UCT ECC
From Greenlevel.org
There was lots of anti-military activity pre-ECC on campus which I'm including on this page.
Peter Hathorn, conscientious objector addressing a meeting in the Leslie (either in 1983 or 1984)
In 1989, realising that conscription offered a way of getting non-Nusas types involved in organisation, UCT ECC was re-cast as STOP (Students Towards Peace). In addition to conscription and conscientious objector support, STOP organised several campus cultural events (including a massive jol - organised by Mark Irvine - with Bright Blue and a very stoned Basil Coetzee in Jammie [one of the few times Basil played the sax solo on 'Weeping' live with Bright Blue]); had an "Act of God Comm" responsible for random acts of graffito and banners across the M3; and had a reputation for inventing t-shirt slogans of questionable political correctness ("girls say yes to boys who say no"; "I refuse to service the SADF").
