SCAG - Student Community Action Group
When I joined SCAG near the end of 1987 it was co-ordinated by Nicky Robins and Sally Field. SCAG was responsible for highlighting State repression, providing support to UCT students (detained, in prison or on trial) and took the lead in raising awareness around off-campus activities.
The sub-committee hosted the "National Detainees Day" mass meetings, worked with the DPSC (Detainees' Parents Support Committee) and arranged Social History Tours during Orientation Week.
We worked with staff at UCT Criminology Dept (Wilfred Schaff, Beattie Hofmeyer, Rob ?) as well as other academics who provided practical and financial assistance (through SERG stop-orders) for "anti-repression" activities.
SCAG printed and distributed the RMG Bulletin, that provided a weekly updated listing of detainees.
During 1988 SCAG brought the "Save Lawaaikamp" campaign to campus - under the leadership of Cameron Dugmore. Residence of Lawaaikamp were to be forceably removed to Sandkraal. - DPR
On the Lawaaikamp campaign, a whole lot of us went down to George on a hired bus, which was stopped just short of Lawaaikamp on the N2 by the traffic cops, on completely spurious grounds. While we waited, Jonathan Shapiro, later to become famous, drew an hilarious cartoon of the proceedings...(Wonder whether he kept it?). Eventually we were allowed to proceed. SCAG activists included...
