Anyone keen to take over hosting greenlevel.org?: 4 August 09 (Martin Duys)
Hi all, I am looking for someone to either offer a server onto which we can move the site, or to take over paying for the hosting of the site (it is $10.00 per month). I have paid for hosting the site since inception and although it is a very small cost per month; when I add it up over time I can't but help think of all the packets of Fritos I could have bought with the money. Anyone keen?
Proposed change to the wiki: 16 June 08 (Martin Duys)
Last night I was present at a dinner held to celebrate 100 years of there being an SRC at UCT. There was very strong representation from the 80s crew, but I think one thing that became apparent is that every decade of student leadership at UCT had their own experiences and memories to share. It thus seems rather artificial to limit this wiki to the 80s only.
UCT Council Elections: 13 May 08 (Graeme Bloch)
I hope this is not tacky use of a more important community space BUT:
There are elections for UCT Council, closing May 28, in which all alumni can vote. I am one of 14 candidates standing for 6 spaces - you may view manifestos (sic!) and CV's at www.uct.ac.za . I hope you will take the trouble to send in your ballots, encourage others to vote, and if you're very nice, help put me on Council. I am sure I will remain accountable.

Ivan Toms: 2 April 08 (Rogan Mathie)
i wanted to leave a message expressing my condolences to his family and many friends.unfortunately my computer skills are sadly lacking and i couldn't figure out how to do so on greenlevel.org.
I last met ivan sometime in 1986 when i was an activist for cag and ecc and remember him as modest, kind and inspirational.(i don't think i'd met him yet when i was distributing pamplets urging people to support his fast).over the 20 years i was away in the uk i,sadly, lost contact with everyone i knew from my 2 years in Cape Town but i remember
them all with fondness. They, too, will be mourning the loss of a great man.My thoughts and my love goes out to them.
Yours sincerely,
Rogan Mathie

From: UCT Alumni mailto:alumniupdate@uct.ac.za Sent: 29 February 2008 03:14 PM To: Subject: UCT Celebrating 100 Years of SRC
February 29, 2008
Dear
SRC Centenary Celebration: A Century of SRC Student Leadership at UCT
Did you know that UCT is celebrating 100 years of SRC student leadership at UCT? The University wishes to celebrate this milestone by inviting all former SRC members to the "SRC Centenary Celebration" in June.
DATE: 13 - 15 June 2008
WHERE: University of Cape Town
The general idea is to bring together SRC members from years past and present for a campus tour, a "Reflections on 100 Years of UCT Student Governance" colloquium, a gala dinner, and possibly an alumni concert. The full programme of events will be finalised and posted on the website at a later stage.
In the meantime please diarise this date and forward this invite to any other former SRC members with whom you may be in touch. Alternatively you could ask them to update their details using this link: http://www.uct.ac.za/dad/alumni/update/alumnus/ and submit their contact information. There are many former SRC members whose contact details are not known to us, and we really do want to reach as many of them as possible to let them know about this Centenary Celebration.
Further details will be made available at http://www.uct.ac.za/dad/alumni/events/upcoming/.
If you think that you may be able to join us and would like to continue to receive information about the event, please drop us a line at alumni@uct.ac.za.
We look forward to hearing from you, and to seeing many of you in June.

Site statistics: 1 February 08 (Martin Duys)
Things have been very quiet on the site for some time now with no new content having been added for about a month. Come on folks! Dig out those old photographs! I've put Google analytics on the site and thought that some of you may be interested in the amount of traffic the site is getting, and where it is coming from.
A Small World: 6 January 08 (Andrew Meston)
Charles Kent got hold of me and told me about this project. What amazing memories. I live in the US now and jettisoned so much when I moved. I'll scratch amongst my bits and pieces and see what else I can contribute. Thank you Martin, Renee and Thecla, and everyone else for this gift.
Spam: 4 October (Lise Bosman)
Loads of spam starting to appear. For this reason, and because some of the content is looking quite personal, I wonder whether we shouldn't revisit the notion of password-protecting the site? Views?
19 October (Martin Duys) I have changed registration as follows: when you register you are now sent an email confirming your email address. Since then, no spam :-)
28 September, 2007 (Matt Smith)
Site starting to look stunning, very impressed! Perhaps we could link the Dynamo Obs page to other sports? After all there was an SRC president who played 1st team hockey, another who would have been a Champion Jockey if she hadn't discovered NUSAS and everyone's favourite Education Officer who was the archetypal "Iron Woman" having swum to Robben Island, cycled to Plett and hopped up the three peaks all before breakfast! Oh and how about twisting Craig Matthew's arm or some other media whiz - Thecla? - into providing some video clips showing demos on de waal, rallies in Jammie or the like?
Invitation: 26 September 07 (Alison Billing)
At the risk of mucking up the site, you are all invited to my lecture on 31 October.
This doesn't look like the right place to put this - but where is? Please move me if necessary.
Well done, everyone: 18 September 07 (Ray Hartley)
Well done to all who have worked on this wiki! So it turns out that the UCT people mastered social media before those from Rhodes (er, with its Jounalism dept an all) Was thinking of doing a Rhodes page, but I'm not sure the Wikipedia servors could handle the file size of the spies page. Actually, that was not funny.
Being hit by spammers: 23 August, 2007 (Martin)
Hi All, we are being targetted a bit by 'wiki spammers' - people who insert text into your wiki with hypelinks to whatever they want to promote (it increases their ranking with the search engines, the more sites you have pointing to yours the better you do. Nothing too serious, it is manageable at the moment, but if it gets worse, I may have to change the sign up settings as follows: when a person wants to edit a page, they first have to register and then login (this is as it is now). In future their registration may also need to be validated manually by the sysop (me).
Add a new message by editing this: 16 August 2007(Steve Gordon)
Hello, and thanks for the initiative. Gonna try post some content when time and familiarity with this editing system allows. Got quite a lot of old materials.. more especially from early 80's which was my 'media officer' time. 'bye for now! YIKES - I deleted the wrong part. Sorreee...Gonna hold back posting till a bit later. Hope nobody proposes a Censure!
From Sue S. 7 August(Sue Soal).
As I was looking at all the pictures I realised that the light from the computer screen appeared to be shining through them, as if they were on a light table. It was lovely ... and about as close as I will get to a light table again. (And the whole wiki is looking lovely too -thanks Mart and everyone.)
Registered Users - update: 06 August, 2007 (Martin)
Well, the registered users are up to 30 and contributions have been pouring in. We have ourselves a wiki :-)
By the way, if you see that someone is registered as a user and you want to contact them. There is an "email user" link that appears on the left hand navigation, when you are on the "users" page.
Hey Renee, well done on the website. It brings back many memories: 17 July , 2007 (Andrew Boraine)
Please don't forget Katberg NUSAS National Seminars - they were great learning experiences, and, as you can see from the following photos, great for developing singing careers...
[From Tony K: Andrew -- as I remember it, you were singing "Love Me, I'm a Liberal..." I think we need the lyrics. Better still, why not record an mpeg and post it on the site!]
How to Add Images... 16 July, 2007 (Diane Sandler)
I would love to put many of the pamphlets/photos/publications on the site for the early 1980's but I can't fathom how to do it, computors not being my thing. That said, the site is wonderfully user friendly until the picture thing stumps me.
Hi Diane
Find a suitable page where you want to display the image, for example a page dedicated to a year (e.g. 1982).
Click the Edit tab for that page, as you did to add your message, above.
Type descriptive text for the image (e.g. This is a UDF poster for a Mass Meeting).
Then include a "picture link" - which is the image file name (e.g UDF Poster 1982.jpg)
But you must wrap the name in 2 pairs of square brackets [[ ]]
AND include the prefix Image:
So the link should read This is a UDF poster for a Mass Meeting [[Image:UDF Poster 1982.jpg]]
Now you must Save the page.
Red linking text e.g. (UDF Poster 1982.jpg) will now be displayed on the page, as a place holder for the image.
You Click on the Red linking text and a new page opens up that allows you to Upload the relevant image file (e.g. UDF Poster 1982.jpg)
Browse to find it on your computer's harddrive, select the image and click Upload.
If the image is very big, try to resize it before uploading it.
This seems very complicated but give it a try - it is easy once you get the hang of it.
Also take a look at the Groundrules page.
We can help Edit the pages later, if necessary, to improve layout, etc.
I look forward to seeing your pamphlets/photos/etc.

11 July (Thecla)
Not so sure how to use this either, but having a go. Think the idea is great. Can't see people's biogs - where to find? Also, what about people in non-official positions? I'm thinking glamorous / interesting comrades and fellow travellers, like Miriam, and Imre? BTW tI am happy to start ranting about factionalism - finally I can get stuff off my chest! - but not sure where the best place for this would be? DO clarify. Thecla
12th July (Martin)
Hi Thecla,
I couldn't agree more about people in non-official positions. It actually doesn't really matter where you add them for now, just as long as they are on the site. The main thing to focus on is getting the content up. People will find sensible places to put things and will re-organise as we go. It's a 'self-organising system' :-)
Same applies with factionalism - just put in a link and give it a go. Helen Perry is also very keen to start addressing the topic, so between the two of you that should make for some interesting content..... :-) And besides, it's about time somebody explained the whole thing to me. I only caught the tail end of the hoo ha, and was blissfully ignorant of what it all meant, just that some people weren't talking to some other people for some unfathomable reason, and that one crowd tended to dress a bit better than the other
regards, Martin
PS I moved your biog to the main site, you had put it under your user profile
Usage... 28 June, 2007 (Dion)
I have chatted with a couple of people who have visited the site (but not registered).
They have said that they "don't get it..."
I think they are confused by the quantity of links but comparatively little content behind them.
But we'll get there - as we add more content interest & participation should increase.
Maybe a bit of provocative content will inspire people :-)
Registered Users: 25th June, 2007 (Martin)
We now have 14 registered users, but as far as I can tell only myself, Lise, Renee, Charles, Dion, Barbs, and Allison have added any content.
Is this wiki too difficult too use? I suspect that this may be the case?
Do we need to provide more comprehensive help?
