[From Tony Karon: What I remember most about that afternoon was that Andrew Boraine broke a taboo by becoming the first Nusas president to shout "Amandla" and raise his fist; it was time to crank things up a little. But Andrew was worried that the gesture would be so shocking that the audience would be too stunned to respond. So he came to me and a couple of others to prime us to be ready to scream back "nga Wethu!" Which we did. And then we didn't see Andrew again for months, because he was detained that night...]

Students across the country had risen up over the anti-Republic day protests, our own leaders had been detained, and instead of taking that campaign out into the streets, here we were protesting, with no clear demands or purpose, about a strike that had ended a year earlier. Talk about missing the point, even if it was an excellent adventure...]
